BYD puts N. American headquarters in LA

BYD is the first major Chinese mass-production automobile company to set up a headquarters in the United States, the governor said.

Its decision to choose California was based largely on the state’s commitment to nation-leading green policies that create long-term demand for renewable energy automobiles and products, Schwarzenegger said.

The decision is expected to initially create up to 150 jobs in California, according to the governor.

“California’s market-friendly energy and environmental policies are playing a vital role not only in making California more energy secure but also in bringing companies like BYD to our state,” said Schwarzenegger.

BYD’s Los Angeles headquarters will be responsible for sales, marketing, and research and development for its automobiles and energy products, which include solar panels, LED lighting systems and home and grid level energy storage units through BYD’s unique iron-phosphate batteries, Schwarzenegger’s office said in a statement.

Schwarzenegger has developed a strong relationship between California and China that focused on protecting the environment and growing the economy, the statement said.

Exhibit casts spotlight on triple hanging

The Erie Canal opened, Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette visited, and a Jewish city was proposed for Grand Island.

Crowds were on hand for each, but they paled next to the 20,000 to 30,000 spectators who poured into Niagara Square on June 17 to witness the public hangings of three brothers convicted of murdering a traveling peddler.

The size of the crowd — which reportedly included people from throughout the state, surrounding states and Canada — was staggering for Buffalo, then a village of 2,412 residents.

“That was the biggest thing that happened all year,” said Anne Conable, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library spokeswoman. “They talked about it for years afterward, about all the people who came to town to see this hanging and what an important day it was.”

The event is recalled in “The Three Thayers: Murder and Spectacle in Early Buffalo,” on display through May 23 in the Central Library.

Displayed in the library’s Grosvenor Rare Book Room, the rare documents of the crime, trial and hanging tell the brothers’ story and the tenor of the times through broadsheets, court documents, written accounts, murder ballads and even musical instruments used at the hanging ceremony.

The brothers had spent the day slaughtering pigs on the farm and thought the blood could help disguise Love’s murder.
